THE OLIVE GROVE

Ulivi locadina.jpg

The olive grove is composed of 1000 plants of 8 different typical Tuscan varieties. The most numerous are Frantoio and Leccino, while the others (Maurino, Moraiolo, Olivastra Saggianese, Leccio del Corno and Pendolino) represent about a third of the cultivation.

The trees are fertilized with the sowing and planting of green manure crops, whose seeds are self-produced in the farm.

THE VEGETABLE GARDEN AND THE SMALL FRUIT

This is our main passion, horticulture! We have a vegetable garden of about 3000 sq.m. in which we grow any conceivable vegetable! This is the part that needs the highest amount of time and energy, but in the end it always pays back our efforts! We start directly from the seed, we grow our little plants in the seedbed and then we bring them to the field, where they grow protected by straw that gives them the right amount of moisture in the dry summertime.

For every row of vegetables we have a row of flowers and aromatic plants that are shelters for useful insects and little birds and they contribute to give vigor back to the land thanks to the rotations. We only fertilize using organic compost or manure, alternated with green manure crops of the autumn.

A strawberry field of about 500 sq.m. gives us its amazing fruit both for the sale and for the preparation of preserves.

THE ORCHARD

The orchard is composed of approximately 110 trees. There are apples, pears, quinces, cherries, black cherries, plums, apricots, figs, almonds, peaches, nectarines and pistachios. The fruit that we collect will be used, in addition to the direct sale, for the preparation of jams, fruit preserves and juice. The trees are fertilized with the sowing and planting of green manure crops, whose seeds are self-produced in the farm.

I PROFUMI AND NOT ONLY….

We started with 2 families with the idea to have around ten over the years. BEES are fundamental in a farm. Thanks to their work as pollinators, they increase the harvest both in fruit trees and vegetables, not to mention the great honey that they offer to us. We weren’t born beekeepers, so we still have to specialize in it, but we want to gain that confidence that these insects deserve. In order to guarantee their safety too, we try to reduce to a bare minimum the treatments, even if organic, that some crops require.

A very small SAFFRON cultivation that will grow over the years when the bulbs autonomously increase in number. Saffron requires a lot of work, all manual, without the use of machines: from the sowing to the elimination of weeds and the harvest of those very precious flowers.

Inside our vegetable garden, in our garden, in the fields and wherever it is possible, we have a multitude of OFFICINAL and AROMATIC PLANTS, sometimes just one of them, some others organized in a small cultivation, with the purpose of giving products to the kitchen, the herbalist’s shop, our health, but most of all to increase the biodiversity and to give precious nectar with their beautiful blossom.

In our fields we grow CEREALS and LEGUMES with organic methods, we grow our seeds and rotate fields including green manure ones in order to have high quality products and strengthen the fertility of the soil.
